how to make suet cakes for birds

Thursday, April 18th | 6 PM | Our Lady of the Snows | $5 | Sign-up

In this class, students will learn how to render suet, make suet cakes, and properly care for suet feeders. The focus of this class will be attracting the birds we have at Alta. Students will learn how to entice all types of feathered friends, increase bird population, and properly care for suet feeders. This class will instruct the students how to use homemade recipes to specifically tailor their feed selections to the birds they would like to attract. Raw suet will be rendered by heating, then we add the bird seed and mold into suet cakes using pans, muffin tins, wooden logs, and food-storage containers.

Diane Harrington is a snow enthusiast residing in Sandy, UT. She studied Natural Resources Conservation Management at the University of Kentucky. Diane moved to Utah in 2002 for a ski winter, a chance to see the many national parks, rivers, and mountains. She has always loved wildlife and connecting with nature. In March 2020, Diane was gifted a mountain-side ski-accessed bird feeder in Little Cottonwood Canyon to maintain. The responsibility of maintaining this feeder and the connected benefits to both herself, other observers, and the birds were tremendous. Diane did such a great job and enjoyed her tasks as the "birdfeeder" more stations were assigned to her care. She is now in charge of maintaining 8 mountainside ski accessed bird-feeding areas. The birds eat a lot of food in the winter and need extra help. Climate change, loss of the Great Salt Lake and reduced habitat are all issues facing the health of our local birds. Feeding the birds, helping them through migration, building habitat, and teaching others about the importance of our natural world is my mission here in Little Cottonwood Canyon, Salt Lake City, and the world.

ACE aims to create an inclusive and accessible environment for all of our attendees; please contact our Executive Director, Sara Gibbs, with any questions regarding accessibility.
